Originally Strongbow built a wooden castle on that site overlooking the River Nore in 1172. Around 30 years later, his son-in-law, the Earl of Pembroke built the first stone castle.
Three of the castle's original four walls still survive today.
The fourth wall on the south side of the Castle is missing also the gatehouse, moat, and tower. The cause of the of this is because of Cromwell's attack on the Castle in 1650 and his use of cannon on the building.
